Riccardo Zoidl finished first on the queen stage of the Tour of Austria 2024 13th place

With today's Glockner stage, the Tour of Austria 2024 (UCI 2.1) has finally reached the decisive phase. The 151.7-kilometer section from St. Johann Alpendorf to Kals was something for the climbers; in addition to the crowning of the Glockner King at Fuschertörl at 2,428 meters above sea level, there was also a mountain classification at Hochtor (the roof of the Tor at 2,504 meters above sea level). After the rapid descent and the Iselsberg, after a short breather, the 12-kilometer steep final climb to Kals was completed.

Fotonachweis EXPA Tour of Austria

On the climb up the Großglockner, two riders were able to pull away from the first pursuers. Felt Felbermayr cyclist Sebastian Schönberger crossed the Fuschertörl in sixth place as the best Wels rider. His two teammates Riccardo Zoidl and Hermann Pernsteiner were also in another chasing group. After that, the stage continued intensively and after the breakaway riders were caught, around 25 riders were at the front on the final climb to Kals. On the last 12 kilometers uphill, more riders had to let go. The Italian superstar Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) took the win after 4:09:11 hours. Ricci Zoidl reached the finish line in 13th place and Hermann Pernsteiner in 15th place, just two seconds behind, and still have every chance of a top placing in tomorrow's tour finale on the Kühtai. Zoidl remains in 10th place overall, 31 seconds behind leader Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates). Hermann Pernsteiner is only three seconds behind in 14th place. "Tomorrow we will try everything again on the Kühtai," emphasises racing director Rupert Hödlmoser.
