The Felt Felbermayr Wels team started the 73rd Fleche du Sud (UCI 2.2) in Luxembourg with an extremely strong performance. On the first stage with start and finish in Canach, Sebastian Schönberger, Matthias Reutimann, Patryk Stosz, Michael Kukrle, Emanuel Zangerle and the Luxembourg local hero Tom Wirtgen offered a top performance. On the 85.5 kilometer long section, Michael Kukrle and three other professional cyclists broke away from the peloton towards the middle of the race, and they were able to maintain their lead until 8 kilometers from the finish. Then there was attack after attack from the peloton, Emanuel Zangerle attacked together with another player and was only caught 1.2 kilometers from the finish. And so the ultimately expected mass sprint of the field took place on the rather flat section. Tom Wirtgen pulled off the sprint for Patryk Stosz and the Welser sprint rocket took second place in the daily ranking and with it another podium and important UCI points for the people from Messestadt. He reached the finish at the same time as winner Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl - Trek Future Racing Team) from Germany after 1:55:50 hours.
Welser team goes into the 2nd stage with two leadership jerseys
Since the stage winner puts on the jersey of the overall leader and Tom Wirtgen was the best Luxembourger at the start of this cycling classic with 20th place, the Wels team starts the second stage with two leading jerseys: Patryk Stosz with the green sprint jersey and Tom Wirtgen with the yellow jersey the best Luxembourger on the tour. “That was a mega performance by our team. The race plan was implemented optimally,” said racing director Rupert Hödlmoser enthusiastically. The second stage today covers 151.2 kilometers with start and finish in Rumelange. In total, the team from the trade fair city has to complete 532 kilometers by Sunday; a preliminary decision for the overall victory will certainly be made by Saturday at the latest in the individual time trial over 18.6 kilometers in Sanem.
