Victory for professional cyclist Jaka Primozic at a thrilling start to the season in Leonding

With a total of 414 entries in all competitions - elite races for men, women, juniors and amateurs - the largest number of registrations in the history of the race, which is part of the Upper Austria Classics, was recorded. After an exciting final sprint, Jaka Primozic from the Hrinkow Advarics team was able to secure victory after 3:40:05 hours. At the same time, Felt Felbermayr professional cyclist Sebastian Schönberger took second place, while Marco Schrettl from the Tirol KTM Cycling Team completed the podium. “Today's race was hard to beat in terms of excitement and was the best advertisement for cycling. At the 63rd opening men's race over 153.2 kilometers, the first meeting of all Austria's top teams on home soil was eagerly awaited. After around 20 kilometers, Paul Buschek from the Tirol KTM Cycling Team and Stefan Kovar (Team Hrinkow Advarics) attacked. The two were able to build a lead of up to 1:20 minutes before the breakaways were caught halfway through the race distance. The Felt Felbermayr team then took control and ensured that the peloton was significantly decimated with 40 kilometers to go.

This was followed by attack after attack with changing leading groups, before on the last climb to the “executioner” Aichberg - a 500 meter long steep ravine - just before the finish, only three men remained at the front with Sebastian Putz from Tirol, Sebastian Schönberger and Jaka Primozic. Heavy rain that began 6 kilometers before the end of the race made the race even more difficult. In the last kilometer, the trio used tactics and Marco Schrettl was able to catch up with the front runners and immediately sprint to the finish. Primozic had the best legs in the last few meters and won at the same time ahead of Schönberger and Schrettl. “We have set ourselves the goal of repeating last year’s success. It’s a dream that we managed to do that,” said the winner at the finish. Felt Felbermayr professional cyclist Sebastian Schönberger took his first podium place of 2024 today. “We determined the race from the start. All in all, another strong performance from our team,” said the Innviertler.

Record starting field for women - Elisa Winter as the best Austrian in 5th place

The women's race also marked the start of the 2024 Cycling Bundesliga and was significantly extended this year: for the first time, the women raced over a distance of 86.4 kilometers. A record field of 68 riders tackled the route. In the last 20 kilometers, Jarmila Machacova (Team Dukla Praha) tried to escape the field, but was caught up again by her pursuers after a short time. A total of 10 riders then formed the leading group as they headed towards the finish in Leonding. In the final sprint, the German Corinna Lechner (Wheel Divas Cycling Team) took victory after 2:21:32 hours with an average speed of 36.6 km/h, at the same time as the Hungarian Petra Zsanko (Team ARBÖ Rapso Knittelfeld). Elisa Winter from the Union Raiffeisen Radteam Tirol took 5th place as the best Austrian, 14 seconds behind.

2nd place for Johannes Kosch in the junior race

In the junior race over 86.4 kilometers, Johannes Kosch from the ARBÖ Felt Felbermayr cycling club tested his talent and took second place. In a thrilling race, he secured the finish sprint from his pursuers and the podium after 2:07:06 hours, just two seconds behind the Hungarian winner Zsombor Balogh (MBH Bank Cycling Team).

“We had a great race today. “60 marshals worked with the executive to ensure that the event ran smoothly, which was excellently organized in collaboration with the city of Leonding,” said Paul Resch, President of Upper Austria. Cycling Association.
